The Design and Planning of MTR Station Transportation Facilities

Abstracts: Station transportation facilities include concourse areas, automatic
fare collection gates, escalators, stairways and transit platform areas. Evidence shows
that insufficient railway station transportation facilities may lead to accidents. A
passenger was pushed onto the track at Admiralty MTR station due to crowding on the
transit platform. The Mass Transit Railway Corporation possesses one of the largest
transportation networks in Hong Kong and has the mission to provide a fast, safe and
comfortable transportation service to the public. In particular, the corporation is
concerned about the breakdown of station facilities during peak periods. This case
investigates the flows of passenger activities at Kowloon Tong station during evening peak
period and evaluates the performance of various station transportation facilities.
